  THE CENTRE DRAMATIQUE NATIONAL ORLÉANS/LOIRET/CENTRE

On January 1st 1992, the Ministry of Culture, the city of Orléans, the Region of Centre and the Loiret department founded the Centre Dramatique National Orléans/Loiret/Centre within the walls of Carré Saint-Vincent. The first artistic director of the CDNO was Stéphane Braunschweig followed by Olivier Py in 1998. Its current director, Arthur Nauzyciel was assigned in 2007.

A Centre Dramatique National’s core mission is theatrical creation. There are about 30 in France. They were founded just after the second world war under the impulsion of ministers of culture Jeanne Laurent and André Malraux. Their idea was to decentralize and democratize access to culture. The Centres Dramatiques Nationaux are the pillars of French cultural policy whose public service mission seeks the circulation of art, culture and theatre over the whole territory. An artistic quality accessible to the majority.

They are directed by artists who are able to lead and develop an artistic project over a long term. It has to be anchored in a territory and mediated towards the audience. With a focus on creation, contemporary playwriting, innovative stagings, prominent French and International theatre productions, support for young directors and companies, these structures are unique in the world.
