THE PLAY
The very first time Bernard-Marie Koltès came to see me in 1979, he brought two texts with him: THE NIGHT JUST BEFORE THE FORESTS and BLACK BATTLES WITH DOGS. I didn’t understand the first and concentrated on the second which I wanted to stage. It was not, as was the first, a long sentence of twenty-five pages where I couldn’t find any door to get access. It is today that we, Thierry Thieû Niang, Roman Duris and I, work on this text.
Death is waiting or this man who is speaking to us, under the appearance of those too smartly dressed bad boys who beat him up. To delay this death, he has to talk, talk again and again to this boy he is speaking to, to add one story to the next, “to hold his attention with all the words he may find”, as Koltès says himself, tale after tale, thousand and one times, like a vertiginous rhapsody. “He talks about everything and about love as one can never talk about, except to an unknown person, as this one, a boy maybe, silent, motionless”.
Patrice Chéreau.
