THE PLAY
In LA PLACE ROYALE, one of Corneille’s few comedies, Alidor loves Angélique, but does not wish to renounce his liberty by marrying her. He imagines to “give” his mistress to his best friend. The author Frank Smith has composed GUANTANAMO based on interrogations of prisoners suspected of being terrorists and imprisoned in the US detention camp in Cuba. From LA PLACE ROYALE to GUANTANAMO, it is on language’s scene that the traps of manipulation and of power built up or get foiled.
In 2010, Eric Vigner, director of the CDDB-Théâtre de Lorient, created the Academy, a laboratory of theatre gathering seven young foreign actors and French actors of foreign origins (Morocco, Mali, Rumania, Belgium, South Korea, Germany, Israel). The Acadamy will be in residence in Orléans in October to create GUANTANAMO. Both plays are performed the same night. During this travel from one century to another, from the verses of Corneille to the incisive writing of Frank Smith, the friction of the linguistic, historic, human and social differences opens spaces in which our imagination may circulate in unexpected ways.
Eric Vigner has already presented DÉBRAYAGE, OTHELLO and SEXTETT at the CDN in 2008 and 2009.
