THE OPERA
The opera RED WATERS is a gothic tale, a love story between a brother and a sister ; it tells about incest and twins, about poison and bewitchment, about magic and rituals.
The singer, author and composer Keren Ann Zeidel establishes an international solo career since 2000 and has published six albums including her last, 101, launched in March 2011. Her works have been interpreted by Henri Salvador, Benjamin Biolay, the Brazilian singer Rosa Passos or the jazz pianist Jacky Terrasson. Bardi Johannsson, author and composer, is the leader of the Icelandic group Bang Gang. In 2003, they form the duo Lady & Bird to begin an adventure parallel to their own careers. RED WATERS is the first opera of the duo. On the occasion of the creation of THE SEA MUSEUM with Sjón and Bardi Johannsson at the National Theatre of Iceland, they asked Arthur Nauzyciel to stage RED WATERS.
Together, they gather an exceptional artistic team : the Icelandic poet and novel author Sjón who writes lyrics for Björk, the choreographer Damien Jalet, the set designer Riccardo Hernandez, the lighting designer Scott Zielinski and the fashion designer Gaspard Yurkievich.
Lady & Bird, neglecting their usual folk and electronic music, take up the challenge of an opera, tinged by their melancholic lyricism. RED WATERS will be created at the Opera of Rouen Haute-Normandie with the musicians of the opera’s orchestra and a choir of Icelandic singers.
L’Astrolabe and the CDN are associates in accompanying this creation, giving Lady & Bird the occasion to compose the opera in Orléans in 2010.
After its premiere within the Autumn Festival of Normandy, RED WATERS will be shown at the Opera of Tours and a unique performance will be given at the Théâtre d’Orléans organized by the CDN, the Scène nationale and the Astrolabe.
